After some early jostling it was Namibia’s Jonas Jonas who landed the first punch with a straight left but McCormack’s defence stood firm and he hit back with a left of his own as both boxers tried but failed to assert themselves upon the other.

In the second round the Namibian was keeping McCormack at a distance with a strong left but McCormack’s right was just as potent and when he caught with a left as well, the fight sparked into life.

Flurries of blows followed from both fighters, with the referee warning both for holding once the bout got tight inside.

But Jonas was the man in control of the ring in early in the third although McCormack’s movement meant he was never on the ropes for long and the Birtley boy countered with several combinations and right hooks of his own.

It was no surprise that the tight fight went to a split decision on the judge’s cards but it was Jonas who was awarded the win as McCormack settled for the bronze medal.
