The Met Office say the big chill is set to continue into next week with cold and frosty conditions over night and temperatures dropping below 0C.
Forecasters predict a dry start to the week with a possibility of rain and strong winds later in the week.
The North East forecast says tonight, Sunday, January 24 is set to be a cold and largely dry night with a sharp frost forming under clear skies. There is a possibility of a wintry shower towards the end of the night with a light breeze. Temperatures are expected to drop, with a low of -5C.

Tomorrow is looking like a frosty start, then a mainly dry day, but cold, with a little sun to brighten the day. Another wintry shower is possible, mainly over the Pennines and breezy over hills. The frost will return overnight with a maximum temperature of 3C.
Tuesday, January 26 through to Thursday will remain frosty and mostly dry with a bright start to the day on Tuesday. Rain is predicted later on Tuesday and will continue into the week. Wednesday and Thursday will be a little warmer but periods of rain and strong winds are expected.
The end of the week will see unsettled weather with strong winds and frequent outbreaks of rain across much of the country, particularly in the north.
