The weather warning will be in place from 9pm on Saturday, December 14 - 11am on Sunday, December 15 as rain and hill snow is forecast across parts of the North East.

Skies are expected to clear at times to allow for surfaces to freeze over and the Met Office has urged those driving, cycling and walking to take extra care.

Areas affected include Durham, Gateshead, Northumberland, Darlington, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees

The yellow warning also covers other regions in the north of England, as well as southern parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Forecasters have warned that icy patches may cause difficulties for those travelling, with some snow expected, mainly on higher level routes.

Some roads and railways may be affected resulting in longer journey times.
