A yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office and will be in place form Saturday, January 11 at 3am to 6pm. Strong winds are expected to cause travel disruption throughout the day.

North East areas expected to be hit by strong winds include, Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Northumberland, Redcar and Cleveland, South Tyneside, Stockton-on-Tees and Sunderland.

When will the weather be at it’s worst?

Saturday morning will see the worst of predicted conditions, and the local forecast predict that wind speeds could reach 20mph to 30mph in some areas.

However, some areas may experience worse conditions and see strong southwesterly winds with gusts of 50mph to 60mph and eveb 70mph over higher grounds.

What to expect?

Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed roads and bridges

Some bus and train services may be affected and journey times could take longer

Some short term loss of power and other services is possible

Some delays to road, rail, and air transport are likely

What should I do?

Gusts of wind can unsettle vehicles, grip your steering wheel firmly with both hands.

Watch for gaps between trees, buildings or bridges over a river or railway, these are some of the places you are more likely to be exposed to side winds.
