Investigations are under way after a woman died after she was involved in a collision with a vehicle.

Police have asked for witnesses to the incident as they begin to piece together what happened in the lead up to the incident on Victoria Road West in Hebburn.

At around 9.30am today, officers received a report of a collision involving a car and a woman, who was on foot.

Emergency services attended the scene but the woman, believed to be aged in her 60s, was pronounced dead.

Officers are now in the process of informing her next of kin.

Police remained at the scene, close to Durham Court, throughout this morning and the road was closed as they carried out inquiries and collision investigation work.

The road has now been re-opened.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "The male driver of the vehicle involved in the collision was uninjured and is assisting police with their inquiries.

"Inquiries into the collision are ongoing and officers would encourage anyone who saw what happened to get in touch."

Witnesses should call police on 101 quoting log 232 02/10/17.
