Woman 'sexually assaulted' on bus between Gateshead and South Shields

A man on the X34 service between Newcastle and South Shields touched a woman inappropriately on the leg and tried to kiss her, according to police, on Monday, February 15.

The incident is said to have taken place at about 8.40pm.

Police say that the man got on the bus at Gateshead Interchange, and got off on Galsworthy Road, South Shields, at about 8.55pm.

He is described as being white, about 6ft tall, in his early 30s and of slim build. He has short brown hair, a sunken face and stubble.

His top front two teeth were crooked and he spoke with a local accent. He was wearing a black raincoat, blue jeans and trainers.

Inquiries are being carried out in the Gateshead and South Shields area, and officers are appealing for anyone who recognises the man from the description, or anyone with any information into the incident, to contact them on 101 quoting reference number 557 19/02/16.

A Northumbria Police spokesman added: "A woman who was travelling on the bus at the time of the incident spoke to the victim and checked she was OK.

"We would like to trace and speak to this woman as she may be able to help us identify and locate the offender. She is also asked to contact 101."
