Woman sparks South Tyneside rescue operation

A woman sparked a rescue operation after going into the sea in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services, included Northumbria Police, Sunderland RNLI Inshore lifeboat, ambulance and HM Coastguard were called to Gypsies Green in South Shields, shortly before 4am.

A police spokesman said: "At 3.48am we received a call with concerns for a woman in the Gypsies Green area of South Shields.

"Police attended and located the woman and she was taken to hospital. The force helicopter also assisted."
