Emergency services had been called to Marsden after concerns were raised for a woman who was on the wrong side of the barriers next to Marsden Grotto.

She fell from the cliffs after police, fire and coastguard services attended and tried to speak to her.

She was recovered from the water by Tynemouth RNLI's crew, along with South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB), before being taken to South Shields ferry landing, where an ambulance was waiting.

Despite the efforts of paramedics, she was pronounced dead.

The death has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPPCS).
