The woman who died after the was involved in a collision with a car has been named as Carolyn Straughan.
The 67-year-old was pronounced dead by paramedics following the incident, which happened on Victoria Road West in Hebburn at around 9.30am yesterday.
Northumbria Police is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, which happened while Ms Straughan was walking along the road, close to its junction with Victoria Court and also involved a car.
The driver of the vehicle is assisting collision the force's motor patrols unit as its team works on inquiries to establish what happened.
The road was closed off to traffic for several hours as police launched inquiries.
The force has confirmed Ms Straughan, who lived nearby to the scene of the crash, was not using a mobility scooter at the time and had been on foot.
Today, the force said: "At 9.30am yesterday we received a report of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Victoria Road West in Hebburn.
"Emergency services attended the scene and sadly the woman was pronounced dead by paramedics.
"The man driving the vehicle was uninjured and is assisting police with inquiries.
"Investigations are ongoing and officers would like to speak to anyone in the area who saw what happened."
