An Aldi spokesperson said: “We are currently completing preliminary site preparations ahead of beginning construction next year.

“We will keep the local community updated on developments.”

The German company, which has more than 9,000 stores worldwide, will be redeveloping land off Glen Street, which will also see a free customer car park with 70 spaces being created.

It was given the go-ahead by South Tyneside Council’s planning committee.

It was said that work must start within three years.
