World Cup fever hits school in Jarrow

Football fever has gripped a South Tyneside school as "It's Coming Home' now rings out instead of the traditional school bell.

Headteacher Chris Rue surprised pupils at Epinay Business and Enterprise School, in Jarrow, this lunchtime as they eagerly waited for the school bell to toll to signal the end of the morning session.

But instead of the usual tune, students were greeted with the Three Lions World Cup anthem "It's Coming Home."

The 1996 single Three Lions by the Lightening Seeds, David Baddiel and Frank Skinner, has made a huge comeback due to the success of the team.

Football-mad youngsters who have been following the England players enthusiastically, were said to have jumped from their seats singing and dancing to the tune in classrooms througout the school.

Mr Rue said: "The children have really got behind the World Cup, the reaction to the bell in class was amazing.

"The teachers said the classroom was calm until they heard the bell and they all started singing and dancing.

"England are doing really well in the World Cup and it's great seeing the way the children are getting behind the team - so this was something special for them."

The children have been learning about the World Cup and the countries involved.

The football-themed school bell will remain until Wednesday when England take on Croatia for the chance of a place in the finals.
