Bus station modernisation is much-needed

THE modernisation of Jarrow bus station is much-needed work, because the long tunnel shelters we have removed were run-down after 20 years, starting to leak badly and would have been expensive to repair.

In their place we are putting in large individual shelters at each stand, with better lighting, seating and more focused CCTV security to provide a safer and more welcoming place to wait.

These shelters have proved popular at similar bus stations like Heworth, Wallsend and Blaydon.

Nexus carried out detailed passengers counts to make sure the shelters will provide enough space for people using Jarrow bus station when work is complete.

I hope this puts your readers’ minds at rest, and I’d like to thank passengers for their patience in the meantime as we get the job done.

Huw Lewis,

Head of Communications, Nexus.
