Declining Tyne is a shadow of its former self

I SAW three ships come sailing in on Christmas Day in the morning, but you could bet a luxury marzipan stollen that, due to the rapid decline in British shipbuilding, none would be registered in the UK.

Moreover, further along the seafront, though not a hazard to shipping, a flimsy fence had been erected round what was left of the dangerous ramp that connects Trow Rocks to the main beach with two accompanying noticeboards, one reading ‘Access ramp closed’ and the other ‘Use alternative access.’ (I wrote a letter to the Gazette last March complaining of its disgraceful state, which was in urgent need of repair).

What a state of affairs – the Tyne not building ships any more and a council that can’t be bothered to maintain a concrete slipway!
