Grand old day at the races

NO FAIRYTALE ... Jockey Tony McCoy on Grand National Day.

SO champion National Hunt jockey AP McCoy was denied a fabulous fairytale farewell to Aintree in this year’s Grand National when he could only finish fifth on the well-backed favourite Shut The Front Door and in so doing saved the bookies paying out a fortune to once-a-year punters.

The race was won by 25-1 shot Many Clouds, ridden by Leighton Aspell, who also triumphed in the long distance steeplechase last year on Pineau De Re.

However, only a ‘Mystic Meg’ could have predicted the first three home would all be outsiders with the Tote Tricast paying a staggering £21,526.64 to a £1 stake.
