I was pleased as punch to have read Mrs Dorothy Wilson’s nostalgic letter, published in the Gazette’s Time of our Lives page (December 10 ).
Dorothy was talking abbout her memories of Santa’s grotto in Binns department store.
In fact, the Mr Johnson mentioned, who had a great deal to do with the annual construction of the grotto, was my father, Arthur – aka Mr Fixit.
He was a time served carpenter, who sadly passed away in 1999, at the grand old age of 88, shortly before his beloved Binns was demolished to make way for the Argos store.
I hate to think what he would make of the present day South Shields.
A town he once loved so much.
