So a BMA rep reckons it’s time to put a 20 per cent tax on sugar drinks? Why not indeed!
After all, sugar is believed to be as addictive as nicotine and cocaine, and unfortunately is a plentiful ingredient in lots of foodstuffs on sale in shops and supermarkets.
The nasty little white grains, if taken in large amounts, could lead to diabetes, obesity, heart disease and some cancers, costing the NHS an arm and a leg.
Furthermore, as a practice nurse told me a few year back: “Kenneth, if you refrain from dumping sugar in your tea for a week or so you will never go back to such a disgusting habit!”
