Let’s take art exhibitions to the people

The remote, narrow and insular functioning of the Customs House offers a poor cultural deal to South Tyneside and our communities.

Many hard-pressed families can’t afford the transport costs from, say, Hebburn or West Boldon down to the Customs House and back.

Instead of year after year of ‘potted exhibitions’ tucked away and largely unnoticed, I say localise art and culture into the community centres, meeting halls and outdoor spaces of our bland housing estates.

Art can then challenge parochialism, blinkered thinking and enrich the lives of all our people – not just the ‘in-crowd’ at the Mill Dam.
