Sad loss of three stars

James Last.
James Last.

Sorry to learn German-born big band leader James Last has died at his home in Florida, aged 86.

Although christened Hans in Bremen in 1929, it was Polydor Records that gave him the name James in 1965 to boost his international appeal of translating popular hits to his own unique style.

I have much of his ‘happy music’ on various tapes, LPs and DVDs but, alas, never got to see the guy live in any of his concert tours.

I would also like to pay tribute to Sir Christopher Lee, who has died aged 93, who made his name playing Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster in the Hammer Horror films, and actor Ron Moody, best remembered for playing Fagin in the film version of Charles Dickens’ Oliver, who has also left us.

RIP all.
