Yobs are smashing hand sanitiser dispensers to drink the alcohol gel in South Tyneside

South Tyneside Council has said it is aware people have been using the units “inappropriately” after they were installed across the borough as more businesses were allowed to open under an easing of the lockdown earlier this month.

When Councillor Pay Hay, who represents the Harton Ward, posted on Facebook about damaged caused to the ones at the Nook, people reported a number had been broken across the borough.

One said they had witnessed others in Hebburn dispensing the gel into bottles and drinking it.

There have also been reports the dispensers have been damaged elsewhere as the containers filled with gel have been stolen.

Coun Hay said seven of the 14 dispensers set up at the Nook had to be removed due to damage after they were set up to help people protect themselves and others while shopping.

She said she had reported it to the council but when contacted by the Gazette Coun Hay said she was unable to comment on the issue any further.

South Tyneside Council has also set up dispensers in King Street, Market Square and Waterloo Square in South Shields and Jarrow town centre as part of a series of measures with the aim of making it safe for people to shop after lockdown.

Changes have also been made to parking areas, public toilets and stewards are patrolling busy areas.

A spokesperson for South Tyneside Council said: “We are aware that a small minority of people are using hand sanitiser stations inappropriately.

“There have also been some incidents of dispensers being vandalised.

"This is totally unacceptable and we urge people to behave responsibly.

"Any damage will be reported to the police.

“These points have been installed for the benefit of the whole community and in line with Government guidance around social distancing and hand hygiene to help prevent further spread of Covid-19.”
