People from South Tyneside and Wearside have their work and drawings from the Inventors! project on show in the exhibition at South Tyneside Central Library, Prince Georg Square.

The project was the brainchild of artist and inventor Dominic Wilcox who was commissioned by the Cultural Spring, a three-year Arts Council funded initiative working to encourage arts participation in South Tyneside and Sunderland.

Hundreds of local schoolchildren and several people from Ocean Arts Group were invited to workshops and more than 600 drawings of inventions were submitted, with a selection chosen by a panel going forward to a creation stage.

These inventions were made into working prototypes, models or animations and displayed in a pop-up shop in Fawcett Street, Sunderland. A selection of the work moved to Shields Library earlier this month.

Dominic said: “More than 500 people took part in our workshops and we’ve had hundreds of brilliant inventions ideas.

“We teamed up with manufacturers, artists and tradespeople from across South Tyneside and Wearside to bring the drawings to life.

“I’d like to thank all those people who’ve taken part – we’ve been blown away by the huge range of ideas and creativity..”

Julie Robinson, senior librarian at South Shields Central Library, said: “We’ve had loads of people looking at the inventions and the drawings on the wall have proved really popular too.

“There are a lot of creative, imaginative people out there.”

The exhibition will be on show until Friday, March 4.
