Gordon Muchall admitted he was delighted to have earned a new Durham contract after a worrying season.

Muchall’s deal expired at the end of the season, and he had been told it was unlikely he would get an extension by head coach Jon Lewis.

But the South Shields batsman was this week offered an extra year after enjoying a productive campaign.

“I’m delighted to be playing another year with Durham,” he said.

“Basically, I was told a couple of games into the season that it was more unlikely than likely that I would get another contract which was obviously disappointing and difficult.

“They were looking for another batter and that’s where their focus was, rather than on me.

“I was told it didn’t really matter how many runs I scored, which I didn’t agree with to be honest.

“But I got my head down and the last couple of games there were negotiations and now I’ve been offered a new deal.

“I would obviously have preferred if I had known earlier on but I’m glad it’s sorted.”

Muchall has become one of the mainstays of the Durham batting line-up over the last couple of seasons, and has produced some of his most consistent displays for the county.

Having initially only been seen as a one-day specialist, the 32-year-old has forced his way into the four-day team and become of one the side’s most consistent performers in the County Championship. Muchall had the best record of any Durham batsman in both limited-overs competitions, averaging 49.83 in Twenty20 cricket and 45.75 in the 50-over competition.

And he was third in the averages in the County Championship with 41.18, which included two centuries.

He said: “In terms of the Championship, this has been one of my best seasons. I’ve played a lot of games and had consistency.

“I’ve done a lot of coaching with Mike Fishwick, who has helped me a lot on certain aspects, and with the Durham coaches. A lot has been experience and knowing my game too.

“I scored a couple of big hundreds in tight situations and it’s been a good season for me.

“Now I’m looking forward to coming back for the new campaign and helping Durham back to winning silverware.”
