Alan Pardew: Do NOT blame me for Newcastle’s plight!

ATTACK ... Alan Pardew.
ATTACK ... Alan Pardew.

ALAN Pardew has hit back at Freddy Shepherd after Newcastle United’s former chairman blamed him for the relegation-threatened club’s plight.

Shepherd claimed that Pardew, now manager of Crystal Palace, must “take responsibility” for the club’s dire predicament.

Pardew left Newcastle at the turn of the year with the club in a comfortable mid-table position in the Premier League.

But the club has been in freefall under John Carver, his successor, and the team is just two points above the relegation zone after eight successive defeats.

“That’s typically unfair of that individual (Shepherd),” said Pardew, who has lifted Palace above his former club.

“The players they have are trying their very best to get that club over the line.

“The group are short of confidence, but I hope they gain that and the group and John Carver can get them over the line.

“The players I had there have been tremendous in the time I was there, and our results up until I left were pretty excellent, really.

“I’m not here to defend that situation, but I really hope they win (against West Bromwich Albion at St James’s Park) on Saturday.”
