Alan Shearer says he's "very surprised" after Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey weren't called up by England.

Gareth Southgate today named his squad for the friendlies against Holland and Italy.

Newcastle United captain Lascelles has been outstanding in defence for his club in recent months.

However, Southgate instead called up Burnley's James Tarkowski and Swansea City's Alfie Mawson for the first time.

Midfielder Shelvey, meanwhile, hasn't featured in an England squad since joining Newcastle in January 2016.

Former United striker Shearer said on Twitter: "Having looked at this squad I’m VERY surprised @Lascelles16 and Shelvey haven’t made it."

Meanwhile, Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman is in the latest England Under-21 squad.

The 21-year-old saved three penalties for loan club Aberdeen on Tuesday night as they booked a place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals.
