STEVE McClaren has been backed into 1/20 to be Newcastle United’s next head coach.
A flurry of bets today saw bookmaker BetVictor slash the odds on McClaren taking over at St James’s Park in the summer.
McClaren, head coach at Championship club Derby County, had been priced at 2/5 earlier today.
Derby are attempting to secure a place in the Championship’s end-of-season play-offs.
And the 53-year-old has repeatedly insisted that there has been no contract with Newcastle, who deferred the appointment of Alan Pardew’s successor to the summer.
The club put John Carver, previously Pardew’s No2, in charge until the end of the campaign.
Out-of-work Remi Garde and Ajax manager Frank de Boer are both 12/1 to take the job with BetVictor.
