Newcastle target Charlie Austin says he turned down a move to the Premier League.

The striker was wanted by a clutch of top-flight clubs, including Newcastle, this summer.

But the 26-year-old ended up staying at relegated Queens Park Rangers.

Austin claims he rejected the chance to return to the Premier League with an unnammed club.

However, the club Austin is referring to is not understood to be United, who baulked at QPR’s £15million asking price.

“I turned down a move (to the Premier League) which wasn’t right for me and my family,” Austin told Talksport.

“I didn’t feel it was right for me to go, so I stayed at QPR.”

West Ham United, Leicester City and Bournemouth were also keen to sign Austin, who scored 18 league goals last season.

Newcastle could revive their interest in Austin in January, when the transfer window reopens.
