NEWCASTLE United are waiting to discover the extent of the injury which kept Cheik Tiote out of the African Cup of Nations final.

The midfielder missed Sunday’s showpiece between Ivory Coast and Ghana.

Tiote’s Ivory Coast team-mates triumphed on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes in Equatorial Guinea.

United head coach John Carver expects Tiote – who sat out much of the competition with an ankle problem – to report back to the club tomorrow, hours before Newcastle take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

“He’s due back Wednesday,” said Carver. “We’ll know more when he comes back. It’s not easy, the communication.”

Tiote played in just two of the Ivory Coast’s six African Cup of Nations games.
