Former Newcastle United star Nolberto Solano will appear at South Shields Football Club’s Mariners Park, in Shaftesbury Avenue, on Friday, July 15.

It will be one of the ex-midfielder’s first talk-ins, and will see him discuss his early days in football in South America, as well as his two spells at Newcastle between 1998 and 2007, and various other clubs.

Solano’s visit comes four-and-a-half years after South Shields made an audacious bid to sign him in the twilight of his career.

The night will be compered by Steve Wraith, and it is expected tickets will be in demand to see a player who was a true fans’ favourite at St James’s Park.

Alisha Henry, South Shields FC’s commercial and events manager, said: “‘Nobby’ Solano is a player Newcastle fans remember with great fondness, and it will be great for us to welcome him to Mariners Park.

“I’m sure he’ll have some fascinating stories to tell, because his career was so varied.

“His career started all the way back in 1993 in his homeland with Sporting Cristal, and he went on to play for so many clubs of interest, including Boca Juniors, Newcastle, Leicester City, Aston Villa, West Ham United, Universitario and even Hartlepool United.

“Nobby is someone a lot of people will not have heard too much from before, because he’s new to the talk-in circuit, and I’m sure he’ll go down very well next month.

“We’re looking forward to the event already but expect tickets to sell fast, so we’d urge those who are interested to book up as quickly as possible.”

Ticket prices are £10, which includes a pie and peas supper. The event will start at 7pm.
