FORMER Newcastle United target Wilfried Bony is set to be thrown in from the start for his Manchester City debut against the Magpies on Saturday, according to a report.
The Daily Express claims the former Swansea City striker – who joined Man City for £28m in January – will immediately leapfrog Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic in the pecking order.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side are set to face Barcelona in a crucial Champions League tie next Tuesday, and the Express claims City will use Saturday’s fixture to begin a strike partnerhip between Bony and Sergio Aguero.
Bony has just linked up with his team-mates after winning the Africa Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast.
The 26-year-old is a former target of Newcastle, and his agent, Dalibor Lacina, said United were unwilling to pay a £10m asking price for the forward two years ago.
Speaking to the Gazette last summer, he said: “I spoke to Newcastle about Bony last summer. Newcastle should have bought Bony a year ago but they didn’t believe in him.
“They could have signed him for £10m, but they said they weren’t sure if he was good enough, that he was only playing in Holland.”
