Gateshead are stepping up their recruitment drive ahead of a renewed promotion challenge.

The club’s players returned for the start of pre-season training yesterday.

I’ve spoken to the players. I believe they can get promoted, and they believe they can get promoted.

Gateshead’s 11 contracted senior players were joined at the Riverside, Chester-le-Street, by trialists Patrick McLaughlin, Simon Ramsden and River Allen.

South Shields-born Malcolm Crosby, the club’s new manager, hopes to add at least four players to the squad before the new Conference campaign starts next month.

The ex-Sunderland manager said: “At every club the manager will be getting interviewed, and they’ll be saying they’re expected to get promotion. That’s the aim.

“It’s no good me turning round and saying ‘we’ve got no chance’, otherwise it’s not worth me being here.
