Jarrow went into their first ever second round home tie against Warrington Rylands as underdogs but gave a spirited display against the North West Counties Premier Division leaders.

The visitors struck first at a wet and windy Perth Green when Charlie Doyle converted from the penalty spot just three minutes into the second-half.

Jarrow weathered some heavy pressure as Rylands went searching for a killer second goal and got their rewards in the fourth minute of injury-time.

A long throw into the visitors area found the head of captain Jordan Mellish and his effort sneaked inside the far post to send the tie to a penalty shoot-out.

However, it was Rylands that progressed into the third round as they held their nerve to claim a 5-4 win from the spot.

Bell quickly moved beyond the disappointment of seeing his side lose a tie in such cruel circumstances and urged his players to use their Vase run as motivation to improve on a poor start to the league campaign.

He told The Gazette: “How we are third bottom of our league is a big question mark for me.

“I can’t see us staying there with the squad we have now, and everybody is back fit.

“That’s the challenge, we have to climb the league and take the performances

“We have added to the squad since Scott (Oliver) has come in and that has spurred on the lads that were here already.

“We look like we are well organised and difficult to break down.”

He added: “We were understandably disappointed coming off the pitch on Saturday, but I think it’s also given them an expectation that we will improve in other competitions.

“We have to take confidence from what we have achieved and use it to improve on a poor start to the season in the league,” he added.

Jarrow will now turn their focus towards Wednesday night’s Durham Challenge Cup home tie against Gateshead.
