Ryhope CW scored twice in the second half to defeat visiting Jarrow Roofing last night, with the victory lifting the Wearside club into sixth place in the Northern League Division One.

The South Tynesiders made the short trip down the A19 with joint-managers Richie McLoughlin and Mark Collingwood still without a number of players with the Roofers in the midst of a start-of-season injury crisis.

However, despite playing a number of players out of position, it was the visitors who went closest to opening the scoring when Tommy Bailey raced down the right but his centre was hit narrowly wide by Davey Palmer from the edge of the box.

Ryhope took the lead three minutes after the break when Joe Melvin took advantage of a defensive slip and clinically finished into the corner of the Roofing goal.

The Wearsiders doubled their lead just after the hour mark when Corey Nicholson was played through after a small passing move outfoxed the Roofing defence. The Ryhope man gave goalkeeper Shaun Newbrook no chance with his finish.

Despite the defeat, there were positives for Roofing to take with Corey Barnes getting 30 minutes of playing time after a short cameo during Roofing’s weekend defeat at the hands of Morpeth Town.

The former Darlington professional had been out of the game for eleven months following a crucial injury.

Daryll Donnelly also made a return from injury for the Roofers appearing as a second half substitute, giving McLoughlin and Collingwood further options ahead of the home game on Saturday at Boldon against Billingham Synthonia.
