'Absolute filth' - Newcastle fans demand 'SIX YEAR' deal for Toon star after Euro 2020 display

Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar made his bow in this summer’s Euro 2020 when he started Switzerland’s group stage clash against Wales on Saturday afternoon – and fans have been quick to react on social media.

The 29-year-old has struggled for game time in the north east in recent months – largely due to a knee injury – but he was given the nod by his country in their Group A curtain-raiser, and didn’t waste any time in stamping his mark on proceedings.

The Toon stopper came close to scoring a superb opener partway through the first half, but his improvised near post flick was kept out be Welsh keeper Danny Ward.

Schar then courted attention again moments later with a cynical foul on flying winger Dan James to prevent the Manchester United man from scampering into the Swiss box. The Magpie was given a booking for his efforts.

The centre-back helped his side to a 1-1 draw against Wales, with Breel Embolo’s opener cancelled out by a Kieffer Moore header.
