'Absolutely massive' - Sky Sports pundit outlines 'huge myth' ahead of Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

Danny Mills has suggested that Newcastle United’s win over Everton at the weekend could give them a “massive shot in the arm” going into the rest of the season.

The Magpies brought their long winless streak with a 2-0 victory over the high-flying Toffees, and pulled themselves eight points clear of the drop zone in the process.

Steve Bruce’s side have the opportunity to build on that welcome result in their top flight clash against Crystal Palace on Tuesday evening, and could leapfrog Wolves into 14th with a win.

And Mills is of the opinion that Saturday’s three points can provide a solid foundation on which the Toon Army can build.

Speaking to Sky Sports’ Football Show, he said: “[The win was an] Absolutely massive shot in the arm, a huge confidence boost.

"They actually played very well in the second half against Leeds too. They created lots of chances.

"Saint-Maximin coming back I think is huge for them. He gives them that energy, that something different that maybe they’ve lacked in attacking, creative areas.”

Mills then went on to express his sympathy for under-fire manager Bruce, who has been at the centre of widespread criticism from frustrated supporters in recent weeks following his side’s slump in form.

The former England international added: “Steve Bruce, I feel sorry for him at times. He’s always up against it.

“The fans have wanted Mike Ashley out since he arrived. They never really wanted Steve Bruce.

"He’s had lots of injuries to contend with. He finished very well last season, his position in the league, but he always gets this tag of, ‘Oh, he’s negative’.

"Yes, of course he’s a defensive manager by nature. He was a magnificent centre-half so maybe that’s the way he’s going to set up, but with all the injuries they’ve had as well...

"There is still this huge myth in football that it’s all about going out and playing attractive football. It’s not.

"It’s about winning, and if you don’t have great players to go out and play attractive football, winning football, you have to find a different way of winning.”
