The Magpies battled to what could be a crucial point in the relegation fight, matching the Champions League semi-finalists all the way.
And Shearer feels that there is now fresh hope after picking up four points in the last two games after the victory over Swansea at the weekend.
He said: “On the evidence of tonight, and the evidence of Saturday, there’s now a togetherness which wasn’t the case a few weeks ago.
“Three points on Saturday and a point tonight...they have given themselves an opportunity.
“It was important not to lose that game tonight.
“Every single player gave their all tonight. On tonight’s evidence, they are certainly with him (Benitez).
“There’s a little bit of hope now which wasn’t there a few weeks ago.”
