Alan Shearer has tore into Newcastle United in the wake of the club's embarrassing defeat to Crystal Palace.

Steve McClaren's side were yesterday hammered 5-1 by at Selhurst Park.

The result left the club second-bottom of the Premier League, and Shearer, the club's all-time record goalscorer, had his way on Match of the Day when asked by host Gary Lineker if he wanted a "rant".

Shearer didn't pull any punches with his 30-second reply.

“You cannot coach players who don’t want to be coached (and) who are not good enough," said Shearer.

“They have got too many Monday to Friday players, good in training but don’t want to perform on a Saturday

“From the manager’s point of view, I don’t see a plan. I didn’t see a plan three weeks ago at Bournemouth, I didn’t see a plan last week against Leicester and I certainly did not see a plan (yesterday) to stop the opposition.

“Recruitment. The guys in charge of recruiting players have got away with it for such a long time now at Newcastle because the players they have signed are just not good enough. Simple.

“Apart from that, it’s great.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle published a photograph on Twitter of a clutch of players training this morning.

Head coach McClaren had told his squad to report for extra training today in the wake of the Palace defeat.
