New boys Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle found the net in a comfortable 6-0 win for Newcastle United over Bohemian.

Aleksandar Mitrovic, Florian Thauvin, Rolando Aarons and Georginio Wijnaldum were also on target for Rafa Benitez's side, captained by Jamaal Lascelles, at Dalymount Park, Dublin.

The pre-season opener also saw Matz Sels, Isaac Hayden and Jesus Gamez – the club's other summer signings – make their first appearances for the club, backed by around 400 fans, against a weakened Bohemian team.

Newcastle's breakthrough came in the 15th minute when 20-year-old right-back Jamie Sterry found Ritchie in the box.

The winger, signed from Bournemouth for £10million, shuffled the ball on to his left foot and beat Shane Supple with a curling shot.

Mitrovic won and converted a penalty as the half-hour mark approached.

United manager Benitez made six changes at the break, and Bohemian, beaten 3-1 by rivals Shamrock Rovers at the Tallaght Stadium across the city last night, quickly tired.

Newcastle soon took complete control. Gayle – bought from Crystal Palace for £10million – netted from close range in the 52nd minute.

Thauvin, booked on his previous appearance for the club in January, added a fourth goal, and Aarons struck a fifth before being substituted by Benitez, whose name was loudly chanted by the few hundred United fans at Dalymount Park.

Substitute Wijnaldum added a sixth goal before new signing Gamez was introduced by Benitez.

Lascelles passed the captain's armband to Shelvey, introduced for the second half, for the last 15 minutes.

Benitez and his players will return to Tyneside tonight ahead of the club's July 20 game against Doncaster Rovers.
