Newcastle target Charlie Austin look set to start the season with Queens Park Rangers.

That’s the message from Rangers boss Chris Ramsey as he revealed the striker is working hard in training.

I’m having the idea that he will be here into the season.

Striker Austin is expected to leave Loftus Road following Rangers’ relegation to the Championship and has been linked with Newcastle, Leicester, West Ham and Crystal Palace.

But with QPR believed to be holding out for around £15million, Ramsey believes the former Burnley frontman could still be at the west London club by the time the new season kicks off next month.

“At the moment, he’s a QPR player and he’s working hard in training,” he said.

“I’m having the idea that he will be here into the season. If he is here during the season then he is going to be someone that we want to use.”

Newcastle have already splashed out £27.5million, including on one striker, Aleksandar Mitrovic, but appear willing to push the boat out this season on transfers as Mike Ashley loosens the purse strings.

They will take their spending past the £35million mark in the next 24 hours when Chancel Mbemba completes his move.

The Congolese defender was pictured today at a city centre hotel, and at St James’s Park, with club officials after jetting in from Belgium.

Mbemba will have a medical and discuss personal terms before completing his move from Anderlect.
