Luiz is a close friend of winger Kenedy, who is on loan at St James's Park until the end of the season.

Kenedy is a partner in a London restaurant along with Chelsea team-mates and Brazilian countrymen Luiz and Willian.

And Luiz is keeping a close eye on the 22-year-old, who has impressed since joining Newcastle in January.

"I try to help him," Luiz told the Daily Mail. "He was always with Diego Costa, but, since he left, I have taken on that role of looking out for him.

"You see his tattoos and the ripped jeans and you think he's a crazy boy, but he's shy. His past was not easy, he's from the street. But he's a great boy with a big heart.

"I try to watch all of Newcastle’s games and he calls me to ask about his performance.

"But he should not worry, he's been amazing. I'm cheering all the goals."

United manager Rafa Benitez – who knows Luiz from their time together at Chelsea – is keen to sign Kenedy on a permanent deal in the summer.

Asked about staying beyond this season, Kenedy said: "I'm enjoying my time at Newcastle, but obviously I have a contract at Chelsea.

"If something occurs then I will be more than happy, it is a good place for me. I like it."

Kenedy is enjoying working with Benitez, who has guided the club up to 10th in the Premier League.

"Rafa helps me a lot – every day," said Kenedy, who scored two goals in last month's 3-0 win over Southampton.

"But the thing I'm most thankful for is that he had belief in me and gave me this chance.

"I never imagined it would have gone so well. They have amazing fans, they are crazy for the team – fanatical, beautiful. I feel privileged to be around them.

"My first goal was an amazing sensation. When I saw the celebration in the stand, that gives you the energy to do whatever it takes."
