Ciaran Clark is undergoing a medical ahead of his proposed move to Newcastle United.
The club lodged a £5million bid to activate the defender's release clause at Aston Villa yesterday.
Clark – who has made more than 150 appearances for the club – has four years left on his contract at Villa Park.
And Roberto Di Matteo, the club's new manager, was hopeful that the 26-year-old would stay at Villa.
But Clark is understood to be sold on a move to Newcastle, and the deal could be completed in time for him to be involved against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Friday night.
Hull City midfielder Mohamed Diame, 29, is also on Tyneside.
The 29-year-old was pictured at a hospital while undergoing a medical.
United activated his £4.5million release clause yesterday.
