Elias Sorensen set for shock Newcastle United start in China
Elias Sorensen will make his first start for Newcastle United in the Premier League Asia Trophy.
The striker will lead the line for the club, which lost Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon this summer, against West Ham United at the Hongkou Stadium in Shanghai, China.
Sorensen, a Denmark Under-21 international, came off the bench to make his senior debut in Wednesday night’s 4-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers in Nanjing. The 19-year-old was prolific for the club’s Under-23 side last season.
“The young boy (Jamie) Sterry will play,” said United manager Steve Bruce. “And the young centre forward, Sorensen, is going to start.”
Meanwhile, midfielder Sean Longstaff – who has recovered from the season-ending knee injury he suffered in March – will again be on the bench. Bruce said: “We’ve got to be mindful of the fact he’s had a nasty injury – we’ve got to nurture him through pre-season so he’s ready for Arsenal (on August 11).”
