The teenage midfielder – who was promoted to Steve Bruce’s first-team squad early this season – is in the squad for this evening’s FA Cup tie at the Emirates Stadium.

"He's been with us for six to eight weeks now, and we like what we see,” said United head coach Bruce. “Who knows? He's involved. We'll see. He could make his debut."

Anderson, from Whitley Bay, signed a new contract this season on his 18th birthday.

Speaking earlier this season, Bruce said: “There’s a lot of work to do, of course. But we’re quietly pleased with him. He’s on the bench, which I’m sure he’ll remember for a long, long time. I’m delighted with his progress, but let’s not get carried away too far too quickly, as he’s got a long way to go, but, certainly, he’s a talented boy.”
