Adam Armstrong has missed out on a place in England's squad for the European Under-19 Championships.
The Newcastle United forward suffered a thigh injury on international duty in Mexico earlier this month.
And the 19-year-old – who has been running at the club's Benton training ground – is close to fitness.
But coach Aidy Boothroyd has opted not to take a risk with his fitness for the tournament, which kicks off next week.
United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, however, is in Boothroyd's 18-man squad.
Armstrong – who scored 20 goals for loan club Coventry City last season – was a key figure in England's qualification campaign.
