Former Sunderland star Darren Bent insists Newcastle will be getting a “top top manager” in Steve McClaren.
The Magpies are expected to unveil the ex-England boss as Alan Pardew’s permanent replacement this week.
Bent is well-placed to judge the merits of McClaren, having played under him for England and also at Derby County last season on loan at the Championship side.
And the striker has given his backing to his former boss, who was sacked by Derby after failing to get promotion to the Championship.
“Steve McClaren, in my opinion, is a top, top manager,” Bent said.
“We know we let ourselves down (at Derby) last season but he was always going to get back to the Premier League. He is that good a manager it really would not surprise me if he was named the new Newcastle boss.”
