Newcastle United captain Fabricio Coloccini is out of this afternoon’s game against Borussia Monchengladbach.

The defender – who is wanted by Crystal Palace – hasn’t featured in pre-season because of an Achilles problem.

And head coach Steve McClaren had hoped Coloccini would be fit enough to play against the Bundesliga side at St James’s Park (3pm kick-off).

But the 33-year-old – who has one year left on his contract – is not involved.

And Coloccini will be in no position to start the season-opener against Southampton at St James’s Park on August 9 given that he hasn’t played a competitive game since late May.

Goalkeeper Tim Krul has been handed the captain’s armband in Coloccini’s absence.

New defensive signing Chancel Mbemba is among the substitutes.

NEWCASTLE UNITED: Krul, Janmaat, Williamson, Taylor, Haidara, Anita, Colback, Sissoko, Obertan, Wijnaldum, Cisse. Subs: Darlow, Bigirimana, Ferguson, Lascelles, Mbemba, Aarons, Abeid, de Jong, Gouffran, Kemen, Mitrović, Perez.
