Fabricio Coloccini is out of this afternoon’s friendly against Sheffield United.

Newcastle United’s captain – who has been struggling with an Achilles problem – is yet to play this pre-season.

And the 33-year-old is in danger of missing the start of the new campaign, which kicks off on August 9.

Coloccini has just one year left on his St James’s Park contract.

And new head coach Steve McClaren has been reluctant to discuss his situation in any depth.

McClaren, however, admitted the captaincy at United was an “issue” during the club’s tour of the USA.

Coloccini’s defensive colleague Daryl Janmaat will captain Newcastle at Bramall Lane in his absence in Chris Morgan’s testimonial (1pm kick-off).

New signing Georginio Wijnaldum, signed from PSV Eindhoven last month, is in the starting XI.

The midfielder scored on his United debut against Portland Timbers in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

NEWCASTLE UNITED: Krul, Janmaat, Williamson, Taylor, Haidara, Anita, Colback, Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Perez, Cisse. Subs: Darlow, Lascelles, Satka, Abeid, Gouffran, Obertan, de Jong, Aarons, Armstrong.
