New £13million signing Florian Thauvin is set for his first Newcastle United start tonight – while Steve McClaren says Siem de Jong should be “chomping” at the bit to play.
The Dutch forward is expected to start against Northampton Town in the second round of the Capital One Cup, along with Mike Williamson and Cheick Tiote with either Karl Darlow or Rob Elliot starting in goal.
McClaren is looking to hand French forward Thauvin, who came on as a sub at Man United, his first start since moving to Tyneside.
De Jong, who has been injury plagued since joining the club, missed the Swansea trip with a shin complaint but returned to the bench for the goalless draw at Old Trafford.
McClaren said: “It will be nice if Thauvin can come in and have a game, Cheicky hasn’t played this season. The likes of Williamson would benefit from a game and Paul Dummett is coming back from injury. He might be on the bench. “Siem de Jong should be chomping at the bit to play.
“It will be a strong team and a strong bench.” Vurnon Anita, who took a knock to his back on Saturday, will be rested along with Fabricio Coloccini. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Riviere is still a “few weeks” away after knee surgery.
