Former Newcastle United winger joins North East rivals on initial two-year deal

The winger played nine games on loan at the Riverside Stadium during his Newcastle United days in 2013, scoring on his debut at home to Cardiff City.

Following further loans at the Bluebirds and Bolton Wanderers, Ameobi left his boyhood club in 2017 to join the latter on a permanent basis.

After two years with the Trotters, the 29-year-old moved to the City Ground, where he had spent the last two seasons.

During his time at Forest, Ameobi featured 81 times, netting eight times and providing 11 assists.

Now, he returns to Boro as a somewhat experienced figure having clocked up almost 300 career appearances.

Neil Warnock revealed how he made his interest in the player known very quickly as he looks to build a team capable of challenging for Championship promotion.

The 72-year-old said: As soon as I became aware Sammy was available I let him know I wanted him, and we had a few good conversations. I thought it was important he could see what he could do for us, and what I could do for him.

"I've always thought he's a danger, and I'll be looking to use that danger and have a system where I can get him in positive forward positions."

Ameobi has put pen to paper on a two-year contract with an option of a further year.

He becomes Warnock’s second signing of the summer after Joe Lumley made the switch from Queens Park Rangers.
