Georginio Wijnaldum was not on song when he met his new Newcastle United team-mates – but he’ll be in tune on the pitch.

The £14.5million midfielder will face Portland Timbers at Providence Park in the early hours of tomorrow morning (3.30am kick-off BST).

Wijnaldum, the third most expensive signing in the club’s history, joined from PSV Eindhoven earlier this month.

And the 24-year-old came off the bench in Newcastle’s last friendly, Saturday night’s 1-0 win over Sacramento Republic.

Wijnaldum had his team initiation during the club’s stay in California.

The Holland international had to sing for the club’s players and staff – and he chose Bob Marley song “Who The Cap Fit”.

Singing is definitely not my talent!

“I didn’t get to finish it because everyone threw their napkins at me and booed,” he told the club’s website. “Singing is definitely not my talent!”

Siem de Jong, however, knows all about his Dutch countryman’s footballing talent.

And de Jong feels powerful Wijnaldum – who captained PSV to the Eredivisie title last season – will prove to be a huge asset in the Premier League.

“He’s a good player,” said de Jong. “He likes to be on the ball.

“He’s good offensively, but he’s also quite strong and can help defensively.

“He’s quite a versatile player. He can play in a couple of positions. He can make a good contribution to the team.

“He’s a nice guy. I know him pretty well. He’s a good guy, and he really wants to work hard for us. He will do well for us.”
