NEWCASTLE United’s Jonas Gutierrez took another big stride towards a first-team return tonight.

Caretaker manager John Carver was at Whitley Park to see Gutierrez net his first goal since being given the all-clear after treatment for cancer in a 1-1 Under-21 Premier League draw against Bolton Wanderers.

The winger put Newcastle ahead with a right-footed 20-yard shot in the 11th minute.

But Sammi Odelusi claimed a point for Bolton with a goal early in the second half.

Fit-again defender Davide Santon played the full 90 minutes, while forwards Sammy Ameobi and Adam Armstrong were also given run outs by reserve-team coach Peter Beardsley.

NEWCASTLE UNITED: Woodman, Kemen, Santon, Bigirimana, Satka, Gillesphey (Gilliead, 46), Roberts, Smith (Barlaser, 78) Armstrong, Ameobi (Campbell, 62), Gutierrez.
