Hide AdAlmiron, signed from Atlanta United in January, went 26 games without scoring a goal for Newcastle, and the strike – a half-volley late in the game – lifted the roof at St James's Park.
The 25-year-old took off his shirt and ran to the corner flag, where he was mobbed by his team-mates.
And there were more celebrations in the dressing room, where Almiron is a popular figure.
"We're all absolutely over the moon for him,” said midfielder Isaac Hayden. “He's been getting a lot of stick, worldwide stick in a way, because he hadn't scored a goal for us and not assisting. But now he has that assist under his belt – and that long awaited first goal.

"In the dressing room afterwards, everyone was just so happy for him and we celebrated with him. No-one can describe that feeling he has now, because he has waited so long and was desperate to score a goal.
“It must have felt so good for him, but for everyone else, it was very satisfying, because we know how hard he has worked and how much he wanted it. Only if you are a team-mate of him can you truly appreciate his work rate and industry week in, week out.
"Sometimes, perhaps it’s difficult for fans to understand his contribution, but, believe me, his team-mates appreciate the work he does. Obviously, everyone looks at goals and assists, but the game’s so much more than that – and we know what he gives us out on the pitch. "
Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka added: “Miguel plays an amazing role for us. We all know what an important role he plays for us. We’re so delighted for him."
